Every year we update our list of the 10 Best Wine Clubs and its high time we got around to announcing the 2012 results and giving you some insight into our wine club review process.

2012 has been a great year so far for wines and we’ve sure received a LOT of wine from all the wine clubs we’re a member of. Not all the wines have been as phenomenal as we had hoped though. Even some of the gold medal winning wines were just not that great. Which of course calls into question the entire gold medal, silver medal and bronze medal award issuing process, but that’s a completely different blog post that we’ll write about later.

Wine.com Takes Over MyWinesDirect.com

In a surprising turn of events, Wine.com has seemingly acquired MyWinesDirect.com. My Wines Direct was one of our Top 10 Best Wine Clubs for 2009, 2010 & 2011 and we were sad to see them go in Q4 2011. Now it appears that Wine.com is taking over the My Wines Direct operation. A recent visit to the MyWinesDirect.com homepage showed the image you see below.

The Wine.com Coupon Code for 1 cent shipping on your first wine.com purchase is a nice incentive to sign up for their wine club. However, the fine print at the bottom of the page explains that the 1 cent shipping coupon code does not apply to wine club memberships. BOOOOOOOOO!!! Why take over one of the top wine clubs if you’re not going to offer 1 cent shipping to new wine club members Wine.com?! Just another reason why we don’t rank wine.com in our top 10 list of best wine clubs.

I just got an email from the California Wine Club announcing a new promo code that you can use when giving a wine club membership that saves you a minimum of $49.95. I say a minimum, because that’s how much you’ll save if you choose to give a 12 month “Premier Club” membership (their entry level wine club). However, if you choose to give a 12 month membership of the more expensive Aged Cabernet Series you save $210!

The Gold Medal Wine Club announced a couple of days ago that they were going to be offering free shipping on ALL ORDERS when you enter the Gold Medal Wine Club Coupon Code FREESHIP. While this special coupon was supposed to expire today at 12 noon, I just checked it and it still works! How much longer it works for is anyones guess though, so I recommend using it as soon as possible. My Wines Direct Wine Club Goes Out Of Business

I was sad to see My Wines Direct go out of business this past holiday season Q4 is usually the best time of the year for most wine club providers too, its unfortunate they couldn’t make it to December 25th to reap the rewards of all the holiday shoppers. We first reviewed the My Wines Direct wine club 6 years ago and greatly enjoyed receiving the high-quality wines they delivered from around the world. We wish the My Wines Direct team the best of luck and do hope they return to the wine club scene soon.
